This is one of my easiest recipes for chocolate cake! This easy vegan chocolate cake recipe may change your mind about simple baking altogether. Sometimes you need to whip up something really fast, a recipe you know that works. That’s why I am going to show you how to make easy vegan chocolate cake in no time!

Simple Vegan Chocolate Cake Ingredients

All Purpose Flour- Gives the cake structure. Obviously, you need flour if you are baking a cake, but you can always switch to cake flour if you have it. If you are wanting to make the recipe gluten free, no problem! I like to use Bobs Red Mill gluten free flour because the blend is easily swapped out for regular all-purpose flour.

Vegan Buttermilk- Vegan buttermilk helps with leavening, texture, and flavor. You can buy this at the store, but its so easy to make!! If you need a recipe for vegan buttermilk, check out this recipe here!

Brown Sugar- Brown sugar adds moisture and a touch of flavor to the cake. I really like what brown sugar does to recipes for chocolate cake. It also is recommended for people wanting to make this cake gluten free.

Cocoa Powder- adds an intense and rich chocolate flavor.Natural cocoa powder also helps with leavening as its acids help activate the baking soda.

Baking Powder & Soda- These are leavening agents used to help the cake rise during the baking process. If you are going for a gluten free recipe, you will need to make sure that your baking powder is gluten free. Sometimes wheat starch is added to keep it from clumping up. Apple Sauce- This is technically an egg replacer, but it also helps with texture and moisture. You can also substitute this apple sauce with flax eggs. I have a flax egg recipe here!

Vanilla Extract- This is purely an element added for flavor.

Vegetable Oil- Oil is used for moisture and texture primarily. You can use canola oil or coconut oil, but make sure its melted coconut oil.

How To Make Easy Vegan Chocolate Cake

Making this simple vegan chocolate cake is a sinch! You can literally whip this up and have it in the oven in 15 minutes or less! And here’s how.

Start of by gathering all of your wet ingredients. You can simply measure them and throw them all in a mixing bowl. You then mix them thoroughly.

Then in a sifter, you combine the dry ingredients. Combine the two mixtures by simply sifting the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. If you don’t have a sifter, simply whisk the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl and add them to the wet ingredients increments.

Once all the ingredients are combined and one homogenous batter is formed it is time to bake. Before baking be sure there are no lumps in the batter, it should be creamy and pourable.

Finally, you pour your batter into your baking dish of choice and then bake it off. It takes roughly 25-30 minutes, but I like to use the toothpick test to be sure. Once the cake comes out, cool it down on a wire cooling rack completely (10 to 15 minutes) before decorating.

This is why I said this is one of my easiest recipes for vegan chocolate cake. It can literally be done with minimal tools, equipment, and time. When I learned how to make easy vegan chocolate cake, I didn’t realize it would be this easy! That’s why I’m sharing it with you.

Are any cake mixes vegan?

Most recipes for vegan chocolate cake will be found online on blogs and sites like this. There is a few store bought brands that are accidentally vegan, but you have to read their ingredients. Other brands are vegan cake mixes but the box may say add eggs, dairy, or butter. These can easily be switched out for vegan alternatives.

How much applesauce replaces an egg?

To replace an egg, you first should realize its function in a recipe. If being used as a binder and to add a bit of moisture, then you can use ¼ cup of applesauce to replace 1 egg in a recipe. I would use unsweetened and unflavored applesauce.

Why do vegan chocolate cakes not rise?

There are a few reasons that could be causing your easy vegan chocolate cake to rise. The batter may be too thin. There could also not be enough leavening power. You may have to play around with the baking soda/ powder ratio. Especially when swapping out ingredients. A lot of times ingredients have multiple functions in a recipe. You could even be using to much sugar, which absorbs water taking it away from the gluten.

Why is my vegan cake crumbly?

When an easy vegan chocolate cake come out crumbly, it means that the recipe wasn’t made with the right amount of fat. Make sure you are measuring ingredients properly. Also, cakes made with vegan butter, tend to turn out a bit drier than using just canola oil.

Why is my vegan cake so dense?

A simple vegan chocolate cake recipe can turn out to be a pain if you don’t do these things.

  • Bake at the right temperature- 350 is always a safe bet.
  • Using too much flour- Don’t use your measuring cups to scoop dry ingredients. This results in packing. Use a spoon to scoop into your measuring cups.
  • Sift your dry ingredients- This will aerate your ingredients resulting in a lighter cake.

How long does a vegan cake last?

Using an airtight container, recipes for vegan chocolate cake can last up to a week in the fridge. Usually 5-7 days. An iced cake held at room temperature, will last 3-4 days in an airtight container.

Measuring Ingredients Properly

I can’t stress this enough! Don’t use your measuring cups to scoop your dry ingredients, this will result in packing. Use a spoon to scoop out ingredients like flour to ensure you don’t pack them. This way you wont use to much and get a dense cake out of it!

Don’t Overmix the Batter

Mix the easy vegan chocolate cake batter until just combined. If there are small lumps, that is ok. Overmixing your batter will over work the gluten and cause your cake to be dense and not rise properly.

Bake Your Batter Immediately

This simple vegan chocolate cake batter needs to be baked asap. It will begin to lose its leavening ability if it sits too long.

 Different Pan Sizes

If you don’t have the pan size I use, then here are the alternative pan sizes. These times are using baking temperatures from 325-350 F.

  • Three 6-inch round pans– bake for 18-22 minutes.
  • Two 7-inch round pans– bake for 23-15 minutes.
  • Two 8-inch round pans– bake for 18-22 minutes.
  • One 9-inch round pan- bake for 28-30 minutes.
  • 9×9 square pan– bake for 23-25 minutes.
  • 9×13 sheet– bake for 15-20 minutes.

Checking Doneness

  • Toothpick test- Using a toothpick or a cake tester, stick into the deepest part of the cake and pull it out. If the toothpick is clean, then the cake is done. If the toothpick is dirty, then the cake needs more time.
  • Internal temperature- Using a cake thermometer, you could check the internal temperature of this simple vegan chocolate cake.The internal temperature should read around 210F.
  • Sides Pull Away- This is not a sure fire way to check your cakes doneness, but often times it is one of the first signs. When the edges of the cake pull away from the pan, this will let you know to check your cake using one of the other two methods.

Leveling

If making a layer cake, be sure to level the tops of the cakes. Using a serrated knife, you can cut the tops of the cakes off to level them out. This will ensure they stack better.

Chill Cakes Before Frosting

This makes decorating your cakes so much easier! You really should do this. Just pop your cakes in the fridge after they are done cooling and you will thank me later.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 ½ +1 Cups/ Tbsp. Vegan Buttermilk
  • 2 Cups AP Flour
  • 1 ½ Cups Brown Sugar
  • ¾ Cups Cocoa Powder
  • 1 ½ tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 ½ tsp Baking Powder
  • ½ Cup Canola Oil
  • ¾ cup Applesauce
  • 1 Tbsp Vanilla Extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Then grease your cake pans with what ever fat you like to use and line the bottom with parchment.
  • Next, in the mixer bowl or a mixing bowl sift your dry ingredients ( Ap flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt).
  • Now mix the remain ingredients together and add them to the mixing bowl with dry ingredients. Mix this batter until just combined, and then don’t mix any more.
  • Divide the cake batter between the two pans. Be sure to tap any air bubbles out. Then bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes. Check your cake from time to time.
  • Once the cake is finished baking and fully cooked, take the cake out of the oven and leave in pans for 5-6 minutes at room temperature. Then remove them from the pans and let cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Once cool, transfer to the fridge and chill for another 10 minutes until cold.
  • Now the cakes are chilled, level off the tops and ice the cake with a spatula and the vegan icing.
  • Finally put any last minute decorations on the cake, and it is ready to eat!
