- Ida Red Apples-These apples are a Michigan favorite and for good reason too! This September produce in season is medium sized and generally round shaped. The skin of this amazing apple is green with a bright red overlay, covering a yellowish green and sometimes has a pinkish hue.

Grapes are THE fruits in season in September!In September alone, there are roughly 60 varieties of grapes that are harvested! This is insane numbers! A lot of these grapes are used in wines and other beverages, but we like to eat our grapes around here! Check out the delicious grape’s varieties during this season!
- Thomson Seedless-when it comes to fall fruits and vegetables, this is a classic! Also known as a “sultana” this grape is a small, sweet, and mild flavored green grape. This is one of the most common grapes out there.
- Autumn Royal-This grape brings a lot to the fruits in season in September! These late bloomers are plump, oval-shaped, and dark purple. A medium thickness skin protects a firm translucent flesh that gives off a delicious, sweet flavor. Overall, this is a great September produce in season.
- Concord-This grape is how you know it is officially fall! These tasty grapes have a thick sour skin, with a decadent flesh. This fruits in season in September has big tannic seeds that are not edible. You can pit these grapes, or you can cook them down and strain the syrup, just don’t eat the seeds!
When buying any grapes, be sure the grapes are plump and firm. Stay away from any shriveled grapes or mushy ones. Be on the look out for mold that may hide in between clusters as well.
Ground Cherries are a September produce in season at its peak during this time! These delicious treats are also known as the “Cape Gooseberry”, “Chinese Lantern”, or “Goldenberry”. This delicious fruits in season in September is wrapped in a papery husk similar to a tomatillo.
Ground Cherries have a smooth, almost waxy skin! Their inner pulp contains tiny yellow seeds which are not only edible, but they also add delicious textural element! The fruit offers a tart acidity that rivals the flavor of a tomato crossed with a pineapple!

- Sharon Fruit-This persimmon is a sweet fruit in which the astringent property has been removed artificially. This type of persimmon has no core and is seedless in nature. This makes the Sharon fruit extremely popular across the world.

With this September produce in season, always buy in the husk! In addition, you want to make sure the skin underneath is unbroken and doesn’t have any soft or mushy areas. Your tomatillo should be firm. Look at any exposed areas, top, and bottom for any mold that could be hiding.
These fall fruits and vegetables are hard to classify! They are widely thought of as vegetables, but technically they are fruits. With thousands of varieties, going off of appearance will prove to be ineffective. Check out these fall varieties of tomatoes!

- San Francisco Fog-Large tomatoes that grow in clusters about 2-3 inches in diameter, with s bright red skin. These tomatoes were bred for the cool, west coast climate. These are really good for canning, salads, and sauces.
When buying tomatoes, avoid all of these signs of going bad. Pick firm and heavy tomatoes. Don’t buy any tomatoes with bruises or soft and mushy areas. You also want to smell your tomatoes. If they have a pleasant smell, then your solid. Avoid any blue or white mold on the tomatoes as well.
Watermelons have a few different varieties, but these summer season fruits mostly have the same characteristics. You want to buy the darker green melons, as they are going into the ripe stage. Lighter melons are a gamble. Here are a few varieties of watermelon you have to try this season!
- Charleston Gray- Huge and elongated, these melons are named after their greenish-gray skin. These melons have a sweet, juicy, and bright red flesh.
- Georgia Rattlesnake- These are one of the oldest heirloom watermelons around! One of the biggest as well, with oblong shape and a super tough rind. The crimson flesh is sweet and popular among the younger crowd.
- Blacktail Mountain- This watermelon is a trooper! One of the earliest fruits in season in September and can continue to ripen in temperatures as low as 40 degrees. Brandishing a dark green rind, this watermelon consistently weights 14lbs. Its flesh is deliciously sweet making it a summertime favorite
Your watermelon should feel heavy. If it doesn’t, move on to another. Lastly, use the thump test. Tap the watermelon on its underbelly if it sounds hollow then its good.

- Delicata Squash-These small oblong fruits in season in September, have a cream colored rind with green stripes running from end to end. The flesh is a yellowish orange color and at its center are a cove of edible seeds. The cool thing about this squash, is that after its cooked, you can eat the skin!
- Ambercup Squash- also known as “Red Kobacha”, the amber cup squash is similar to the acorn squash. With a thick rind, this squash has the durability of a pumpkin. On the inside is a dense and sweet flesh with extraordinarily little moisture. At its innermost core, lies a web of pith and seeds, that are easily removed with a spoon.

When buying basil, you want to buy the freshest possible due to the short shelf life. You want to stay away from any brown or black leaves that are slimy in texture. You want to avoid any moisture at all.
Whether red or green, look for cabbage with tight leaves and firm heads. No matter what variety of cabbage you’re looking for, it should feel heavier than it looks. Avoid any discoloration or soft spots because this is a big sign of rot.
Chili peppers are vegetables in season in September that come in many shapes, sizes, and varieties. With the different varieties comes varying heat intensities. Here are a few varieties of chili peppers that bring the heat to Fall fruits and vegetables.
- Anaheim-These delicious peppers originated in south Carolinas Anaheim city! These peppers look similar to poblano peppers in shape but are lighter in color. These peppers aren’t very spicy, but they do offer a lighter peppery flavor. These peppers have a SHU or Scoville hot unit of 250-2500.
- Mirasol-in Spanish, mirasol means “looking at the sun”. These peppers grow upwards were the bottom tips of the peppers point to the sun. These little peppers vary in size, but they all have the red to dark red color. In dried form, they are known as the guajillo pepper!
- Piri Piri-These chilis are thin walled and grow to be 2-5 cm long. Don’t let their small size fool you, these peppers are spicy hot!! Mainly used in African or east Indian cooking, these peppers are any easy way to introduce crazy heat to your cooking.
All peppers should have a shiny or glossy skin and a firm texture to them. Stay away from any peppers where the skin is broken, or the inside is exposed. Avoid any dark brown or black mushy spots all together.
Chives are in the allium family and are broken down into two subcategories. There are European chives and Chinese chives. Either way, you’re looking for green tubes with no yellowing or dark brown areas. Be sure you buy chives that are dry you don’t want any moisture on your chives.
Edamame are pretty much ripe soybeans. These delicious snacks are harvested before they dry out in their pods. These vegetables in season in September should be firm, bright green, and crisp. Avoid any extra moisture, slimy areas, or discoloration.
Eggplants are a type of vegetables in season in September. The squash family has a multitude of colors and sizes. These fall fruits and vegetables can be purple, white, green, or orange hues. Looking for the best eggplant is simple though. First, check out some eggplant varieties available during this time.
- Black Beauty – This is one of the common varieties. Other varieties include ‘Black Magic’, ‘Purple Rain’, and ‘Early Bird’.
- Black Bell – This is the classic Italian eggplant. It has an oval to round shape with a deep purple-black, glossy skin.

This July produce guide features an amazing herb that has been used for thousands of years for more than just food. Nevertheless, lavender add a sweet accent to teas, coffee, and sweet dishes. Peas are a type of September produce in season that vary in size, color, and variety. You could come across white, purple, yellow, or the most common green pea. When purchasing these delicious plump pods, they should have a bright green hue. Avoid mushy and slimy pods with any discoloration.
There may be the most species of potatoes than any other vegetables in season in September! With that being said, you cannot decide how to buy a potato based off color alone. Pick potatoes free of any mold (the most common is blue, white, or red) or mushy areas. You also want to avoid potatoes that have bruised or broken skin.
These vegetables in season in September is packed full of nutrients, making is extremely attractive to the July produce guide. Sweet potatoes come in all shapes and sizes, and range in colors from white to purple. Buying sweet potatoes is pretty straight forward. You want to buy a firm potato with no soft or mushy areas. Avoid any moisture or slimy textures and any sweet potatoes with exposed flesh.
Often confused with sweet potatoes, these bring the new season with other fall fruits and vegetables. Real yams have a tougher bark and offer a less sweet flavor.
