Easy Vegan Chocolate Cake

Simple and easy vegan chocolate cake recipe is moist, decadent, and deliciously rich. This simple vegan chocolate cake is tailored for speed and efficiency.

  • 1 ½ +1 Cups/ Tbsp. Vegan Buttermilk
  • 2 Cups AP Flour
  • 1 ½ Cups Brown Sugar
  • ¾ Cups Cocoa Powder
  • 1 ½ tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 ½ tsp Baking Powder
  • ½ Cup Canola Oil
  • ¾ cup Applesauce
  • 1 Tbsp Vanilla Extract


  • Preheat oven to 350F. Then grease your cake pans with what ever fat you like to use and line the bottom with parchment.
  • Next, in the mixer bowl or a mixing bowl sift your dry ingredients ( Ap flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt).
  • Now mix the remain ingredients together and add them to the mixing bowl with dry ingredients. Mix this batter until just combined, and then don’t mix any more.
  • Divide the cake batter between the two pans. Be sure to tap any air bubbles out. Then bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes. Check your cake from time to time.
  • Once the cake is finished baking and fully cooked, take the cake out of the oven and leave in pans for 5-6 minutes at room temperature. Then remove them from the pans and let cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Once cool, transfer to the fridge and chill for another 10 minutes until cold.
  • Now the cakes are chilled, level off the tops and ice the cake with a spatula and the vegan icing.
  • Finally put any last minute decorations on the cake, and it is ready to eat!

Don’t Overmix the Batter

Mix the easy vegan chocolate cake batter until just combined. If there are small lumps, that is ok. Overmixing your batter will over work the gluten and cause your cake to be dense and not rise properly.

Bake Your Batter Immediately

This simple vegan chocolate cake batter needs to be baked asap. It will begin to lose its leavening ability if it sits too long.

Checking Doneness

  • Toothpick test- Using a toothpick or a cake tester, stick into the deepest part of the cake and pull it out. If the toothpick is clean, then the cake is done. If the toothpick is dirty, then the cake needs more time.
  • Internal temperature- Using a cake thermometer, you could check the internal temperature of this simple vegan chocolate cake. The internal temperature should read around 210F.
  • Sides Pull Away- This is not a sure fire way to check your cakes doneness, but often times it is one of the first signs. When the edges of the cake pull away from the pan, this will let you know to check your cake using one of the other two methods.
